EYE@Glasgow: 15 years of EYE
The 30th EYE conference will happen this spring from the 25th - 27th June 2010 in the lively city of Glasgow. The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) is hosting and organising EYE@Glasgow. "Innovating to meet our global challenges" with the tag line Inspire, Engineer, Innovate! - a milestone theme for this milestone conference in EYE’s history. The official website has recently been launched. Registrations will open from Tuesday 9th March 2010 at 12am - don't miss the opportunity to meet the EYE network!
Mobility of Engineers in Europe
ME Today (ASME Newsletter March 2010)- Working in Europe can range from awareness to joint tackling of common problems including technical, economics, social, political, and globalization… right down to the individual engineer issues. In a candid discussion, Evert van Lieshout (The Netherlands) and Roger McLaughlin (UK), both from the European Young Engineers (EYE), provided an early career perspective for navigating the engineering profession in Europe. The two representatives joined ASME's "Young Engineer Career Event" in Orlando (Florida, USA) and became the feature story of ASME's Newsletter March 2010.
Are you already a routined European Young Engineers' networker?
Then something might really appeal to you: the ultimate combination of EYE and WEC! WEC? Yes, WEC: The World Engineers' Convention. In Autumn 2011, the WEC is held in Europe, more precisily in Geneva. The ideal moment to show the world what and who EYE is about! Moreover, it will be the opportunity for you as well to come in touch with young engineers from all over the world!
EYE started preparing the EYE conference which will be held in the frame of WEC'11 in September 2011. Be prepared! More information can shortly be found on e-y-e.eu or on wec2011.org
Delegates meet in Kuwait City
In order to keep a close communication link to the swiss organisers of the upcoming World Engineers' Convention (WEC), the current Deputy Secretary General of EYE Tim Mönkedieck has met a swiss delegation at the "Engineering Congress for Alternative Energy Applications" in Kuwait City in early November. EYE aims to place its autumn 2011 conference in Switzerland - in parallel to the WEC. First concepts and ideas on the realisation were shared in Kuwait. EYE's early involvement in the organisation of the convention allows for a strong representation of students and young engineers and furthermore an outstanding event in the history of EYE.
EYE and ASME closely working together
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and EYE are working more and more together. In November this year EYE is asked to give a presentation about 'Engineering in Europe' during their Young
Engineer Career Event in Orlando, Florida, USA. Roger McLaughlin, former Secreatry General (SG) and current SG Evert van Lieshout will represent EYE. Our member association GIOIN and ASME will organise a joint EYE-ASME conference next year in November in Italy. There is a lot of knowledge and experience to be shared during these two events.
Kick-off for the European normalization of engineering and consultancy services for all sectors
The currently started normalization of Engineering Consultancy Services concerns especially the development of an international common framework of terms and vocabulary for creating a level playing field, where client and task assignee ‘understand’ each other well. Every country is forming a national normalization committee to stipulate the national importance and will introduce this in the European TC and working parties.
EYE goes international
"Involving engineering students and young professionals": This has been the main goal of a meeting held on June, 19th in Geneva. Representatives of the "Young Engineers International" joined a first organisational meeting for the upcoming World Engineers' Convention, which will take place in the city of Geneva from September 3rd to 6th 2011.
Engineers should be leading debates on innovation
Greg Papadopoulos (chief technology officer and executive vice president for research and development) and David Douglas (senior vice president for Eco Responsibility), both at Sun Microsystems, propose that engineers should lead discussions on technological innovation and their impact on society.
